General Education

The Department of Mechanical Engineering requires that the following requirements be met in the general education area to meet requirements for a Bachelor of Science degree.

M. E. General Education Course Requirements:

  • Econ 101 or Econ 102 ( counts as 3 credits of Social Science)
  • 3 credits of Social Science
  • 6 credits of Humanities
  • Additional 3 credits of Social Science OR Humanities
  • U.S. Diversity course
  • International Perspective course

**No more than three 100-level courses can be applied to the BS/ME

Total of 15 credits of general education credits

Economics Requirement

All mechanical engineering students are required to complete at least one of two economics courses:  Econ 101: Microeconomics, or Econ 102: Macroeconomics. One of these courses will count as 3 credits of the 6 credits of social science requirement.

Social Science Requirement

At least 3 credits but no more than 6 credits of the 15 general education credits you are required to take must be from the social sciences.

Humanities Requirement

At least 6 credits but no more than 9 credits of the 15 general education credits you are required to take must be from the humanities.

U.S. Diversity Requirement

At least 3 credits of the 15 credits you take as general education electives must be selected from the U.S. Diversity list. Mechanical Engineering accepts all courses listed on the University’s U.S. Diversity list.

International Perspectives Requirement

At least 3 credits of the 15 credits you take as general education electives must be selected from the International Perspective list.  Mechanical Engineering accepts all courses listed on the University’s International Perspective list.

Checklist

To make sure that you are not unnecessarily taking extra general education electives, use the following checklist to help you determine if your general education elective requirements are complete:

  • I have completed either Econ 101 or 102.
  • I have completed 3 credits of social science credits in addition to Econ 101 or 102.
  • I have completed 6 credits of humanities.
  • I have completed a US Diversity course.
  • I have completed an International Perspective course.
  • I have taken no more than three 100-level general education electives.
  • I have a total of at least 15 credits worth of general education electives.
