Abstract
Engineering design research is an important but often overlooked research area in the engineering scientific community. While some feel that the term “engineering design” is a general term which encompasses a wide range of activities, others have shown that there is solid base for design research that drives the field. This editorial presents a view of design research that emphasizes the importance this research has on the field of engineering. Since 1984, when the NSF Design Theory and Methodology Program was created, many important advances have been made but efforts in that direction need to continue to ensure that this field continues to grow.
