Standard Operation Procedures



Boyd Lab will be closed from 11/19 – 11/26 due to limited tech availability. If you need to use the lab, please contact Craig or Josh ahead of time to see if they can accommodate you.

Students have reported problems seeing content in training videos. If you are having problems with seeing the training content, ensure your browser settings are set to allow flash content, pop-ups, and cookies from Additionally, try using other browsers (Firefox seems to work well). If you continue to have problems, email Josh DeLarm at or stop into the Boyd Lab and we will do our best to help you.


Boyd Lab is a fabrication lab that supports Mechanical Engineering classes and ISU student projects (personal projects are not allowed.) Boyd Lab has a variety of resources such as hand tools, power tools, milling and turning equipment, wood working equipment, metal-working equipment, MIG and TIG welders, and a plasma cutter. In addition, Boyd has several 3D printers available for student projects. Students who complete the required training can use the equipment during lab hours or they can submit job requests to have the shop complete their projects for them.

All students wishing to use Boyd Lab equipment must complete the following items:

  1. All training is recorded using the ME Boyd Lab Safety Course on Blackboard. To get access to this course, follow the directions to self enroll.
  2. Log into Blackboard and click on the M_E Boyd Lab Safety Course in the Courses list. Click on Boyd Lab Safety Training to be transferred to the EH&S System.
  3. Complete the Shop Safety Fundamentals – Basic Procedures and Policies Training and read the Boyd Lab Standard Operating Procedures Document.
  4. Some equipment has an online training course associated with it. Complete the online portion of the training first then sign up for hands on equipment training time using the Student Equipment Training Signup calendar.
  5. An equipment sign-off badge will be issued after your hands on training. This tells the techs what equipment you are signed off on. This must be worn at all times while you are in the shop along with the proper PPE.
