The guidelines describe the role of the plenary speakers, panelists, moderators and participants to the workshop.
For the plenary speakers
There will be three plenary speakers. Each plenary speaker will have 45 minutes to present on their topic. Please plan for a ~40 minute presentation with at least 5 minutes for questions. Remember the audience will be very broad, with engineers, plant scientists, and others in attendance, and they may not be familiar with terms common to your discipline. Please provide a title and abstract to Ted Heindel that we can post on the workshop web site as soon as possible. We would also like to post PDFs of each plenary presentation on the workshop web site after the meeting (a request of our NSF sponsor to ensure the continuity of our effort), so please do not include any confidential information on the slides.
For the panelists
We will have five separate panels with three panelists per panel. Each panelist will have 15-20 minutes to present their thoughts on the panel topic. Please include a few slides to help educate those unfamiliar with your area; remember the audience will be very broad, with engineers, plant scientists, and others in attendance, and they may not be familiar with terms common to your discipline. To help seed the panel discussion, we recommend that each presentation includes at least the following three slides:
- Current trends and state-of-the-art
- Bottlenecks and needs
- Opportunities
Please provide a title and brief abstract to Ted Heindel that we can post on the workshop web site as soon as possible. We would also like to post PDFs of each panel presentation on the workshop web site after the meeting (a request of our NSF sponsor to ensure the continuity of our effort), so please do not include any confidential information on the slides.
For the moderators
Each panel will be moderated by an expert in the field. A list of the panelists in each panel, with links to their web site, are found at https://www.me.iastate.edu/smartplants/agenda/. To maximize the time for the panel, the moderator will introduce each panelist simply with their title, name, function, and affiliation. Each panelist will have 15-20 minutes to present their material. Please make sure the panelists do not go over their allotted time of 20 minutes (we will provide you with two color-coded signs, to display five and one minute before the 20 minute deadline). After the three presentations, the moderator will moderate a 30 minute discussion on the given panel topic. We recommend that the moderator come prepared with some questions to help start and/or direct the discussion. We will have someone available to take notes during the discussion.
