The CARES Lab is a soft tissue and biomaterial mechanics laboratory at Iowa State University of Science and Technology. “CARES” stands for “Characterizing And REsearching Soft materials”. Dr. Sarah A. Bentil, faculty member in Mechanical Engineering, directs the lab. The CARES lab utilizes both experimental and computational methods to study the mechanics of biological and non-biological materials subjected to various loading rates including rates associated with blast, blunt, and ballistic impact.
Our goals are to develop experimental techniques that will be coupled with computer simulations to enable accurate characterization of the mechanical behavior of soft materials. Applications of our results include improving diagnostic tools used by clinicians and the development of effective countermeasures to reduce injuries attributed to blast, blunt, and.or ballistic trauma.
