Song-Charng Kong, assistant professor of mechanical engineering at Iowa State University, recently received the SAE Ralph R. Teetor Educational Award. The award recognizes outstanding engineering educators who are selected on the basis of their academic training, contributions to teaching and research, and participation in extracurricular student involvement. The intent of the award is to encourage educators and practicing engineers to exchange views and technical information.

Kong joined Iowa State three years ago, with research efforts focused on internal combustion engines, specifically improving engines’ efficiency and reducing emissions. His research aligns well with the interests of SAE, which is the premier membership society dedicated to advancing mobility engineering worldwide.

As an SAE member for 10 years, Kong actively participates in meeting presentations and alsoacts as a chair for SAE World Congress sessions. Kong’s involvement in the organization provides him with invaluable industry experience and knowledge, which he incorporates into his courses and research.

For earning the award, Kong received a framed certificate, sponsored trip to an SAE meeting, hosted industry tour, and two complimentary years of SAE membership. The award was established in 1963 and is funded through a generous contribution from the late Ralph R. Teetor, 1936 SAE president, whose belief was that engineering educators are the most effective link between engineering students and their future careers.
