"Orthopedic Devise Development: Marrying Engineering with Surgery"

Karl Kraus will present his experience with the development of several orthopedic devises from identification of a problem, to engineering solutions, manufacture, and marketing. Dr. Kraus has been involved in developing several orthopedic products including an external fixator system, method of ACL repair, bone anchor, bone substitute, and locking plating system. He has started two orthopedic devise companies and holds 6 patents/patent pending.
Biography
Dr. Kraus graduated from Kansas State University and completed residency and graduate studies at the University of Missouri-Columbia. He is a Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Surgeons. For eighteen years he was on the faculty of Tufts University and the Foster Hospital for Small Animals. He also held a part time appointment at Harvard University and assisted in developing neurosurgical procedures on humans at Brigham and Women’s Hospital. Dr. Kraus founded Securos Inc. and has developed several orthopedic implants including the Securos External Fixator System, bone anchor, and SOP plating system. His clinical areas of expertise include fracture repair, spinal surgery, and ACL reconstruction. He is an internationally renowned speaker on the topics of veterinary orthopedics and neurosurgery. He has published 3 books, 25 book chapters and 75 refereed research articles including in the Journal of Orthopedic Research, Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery, Investigative Surgery, Clinical Orthopedics and Related Research, and Experimental Neurology. Dr. Kraus is now Professor of Orthopedics and Neurosurgery at Iowa State University of Science and Technology, College of Veterinary Medicine.
