Brief Biography

Dr. Kim completed his doctoral studies in mechanical engineering at the University of Michigan in 2006. His dissertation work focused on micromanufacturing methods that involved deformation and flow of metallic materials in solid and semi-solid regimes for micro-reactors. During his post-doctoral studies at S.M. Wu Manufacturing Research Center at the University of Michigan, he further expanded his research scope to various manufacturing methods involving machining, electro-discharge machining, and powder-based processing of ceramics and metals. He joined Iowa State University as an assistant professor in 2007. His research group consisting of graduate and undergraduate students currently works on bioinspired composite design and processing, carbon nanotube composites, hybrid manufacturing techniques, acoustic effects on metal plasticity, and fuel cells. His work has been published in 23 peer-reviewed journal articles, 31 conference proceedings, and presented at numerous conferences.

Dr. Kim is the Coordinator of the Design and Manufacturing Innovation (DMI) Program in the Department of Mechanical Engineering. He has inaugurated annual Graduate Research Symposium, which has become a part of the Graduate Open House event in the department. He is the Member of the Editorial Board of the Journal of Precision Engineering and Manufacturing, and serves as the operating board of the Manufacturing Technology Group (MTG) in American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME).
