“An Introduction to Sandia National Laboratories with a Focus on Recent Biodiesel and Advanced Engine Combustion Research Results”

Abstract
This presentation will provide a brief overview of programmatic focus areas and demographics at Sandia National Laboratories, followed by a more detailed description of research activities within the Engine Combustion Department at the Combustion Research Facility in Livermore, California. Two sets of experimental results using an optical engine will be presented, the first from a recent investigation into the cause(s) of increased NOx emissions with biodiesel fueling in conventional operating modes, and the second describing a mixing-controlled low-temperature combustion strategy that uses an oxygenated fuel for meeting on-highway truck efficiency and 2010 emissions targets.
