Department of Mechanical Engineering

Registration

Registration Steps

1. Pick up your most recent degree audit in Room 2062 Black Engineering, the Mechanical Engineering Advising Center.

Monday - Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

2. Carefully review your audit.  If you see problems on your audit let your advisor know as soon as possible.

3. Access the Graduation Planner and complete your graduation plan all the way out to graduation.

4. Once your plan is complete, submit it for review by your advisor.

5. Your advisor will review your plan and if approved, give you your registration access number.  If your advisor declines your plan, please revise and resubmit your plan.

Closed Classes

Even if a class is closed, you should attempt to add it to your schedule. The reason for this is that by attempting to add a closed class you add your name to a list that indicates the names of people that would like to take the closed course.

Departments monitor these lists to make decisions about section sizes, number of required faculty, room size, etc.  If there are not any names on the list, then departments are lead to believe that everyone that wanted and/or needed the course is registered.

Remain persistent in your attempts to add closed classes.  If a class you are attempting to add is closed and is on a critical path of the mechanical engineering curriculum, please let your advisor know that you need his or her help.

Course Restrictions

Some departments teach sections of courses for their own students in a different way than they would teach students majoring in another area. For example, the Physics faculty offer some sections of Phys 221 and 222  only to physics students. You should not attempt to add a restricted section of physics to your schedule.

Some courses have enrollment restrictions on them. For example, only sophomores may register for EM 274. The purpose of this restriction is based on historical data that indicates that continuing first years students do not typically perform as well in EM 274 as sophomores.

Some departments offer sections of a course to their students as well as the students of other departments. However, only departmental students may add a section of a course restricted to them only.

Sometimes, if students in a departmental section do not fill it, the offering department will release seats to students outside of their department. For example IE 305 has seats dedicated to IE students only. However, the IE Department has released seats to ME students in the past, when they were not taken by IE students.  The same is true for Mat E 272. Check with your advisor.

Helpful Hints in Getting Registered

You should register as close to your start date and time as is possible.

Know which classes can wait and which ones cannot. For those classes that can wait, have alternative courses ready to replace them.

Do not schedule conflicts. Scheduling a conflict only secures a spot in a class you already know that you cannot take and it keeps other students who could use that seat from enrolling.

Do not hold seats for another student. Students caught holding seats will lose their entire schedule along with the student for whom seats are being held.
